Answers:

- How can I be sure that my electrical system is safe and legal?

You are best advised to get your electrical system examined by an electrician who is qualified to BS7671:2001 - 16th Edition.  If your system is within a dwelling in England or Wales then the electrician also needs to be qualified under Part P of The Building Regulations 2000.

- How can I provide a better service for my business and get more time
  for myself?

One method is to outsource the service to a specialist provider.  The provider will then become contractually bound to deliver a good service on an ongoing basis while your role will change from delivery to management, thus freeing you up from all those day-to-day operational issues.

Brookvex have years of experience of delivering outsourced and managed solutions to corporate clients and can quickly formulate bespoke service level agreements that will precisely underpin the specific needs of your business.

- I suspect our cabling is slowing down the network. How can I find out
  for sure?

In order to achieve the levels of performance required by modern businesses, copper and fibreoptic cabling systems need to be designed and installed by qualified professionals using high-specification calibrated equipment.  The performance of modern high-bandwidth cabling systems can be greatly impaired through apparently minor installation defects such as cable kinks and tight bends.

If you believe you have a problem with your system, you are advised to get it’s performance measured by a qualified cable installer using the right type of calibrated test equipment.  They will then provide you with documented test results that will pinpoint any problem.

- I need to produce a VOIP strategy for my business. Where do I start?

There are many factors to consider when contemplating a move to Voice Over IP.  Whilst the benefits from VOIP can be significant they can also be very difficult realise
in practice.

Whilst it is true that the world is moving inexorably towards IP technologies for all communications media, it is also true that each business needs to make this move at a time that best suits its own circumstances and capabilities.  Moving too soon or without adequate planning can create unintended consequences that may negate any planned return on investment.

You are best advised to consult an expert who is capable of understanding: your existing infrastructure; your business strategy and the emerging industry standards.

- My supplier talks technical mumbo-jumbo. How can I get a translation
   into plain English?

Simple.  Just email the mumbo-jumbo to us at ask‑the‑experts@brookvex.com and we will translate it into plain English and send it back to you, for free, no obligation and no sales person will call.

- How do I know if my life safety equipment will actually work in a fire?

You are best advised to get your life safety equipment inspected on a regular basis by a supplier who is qualified and equipped to apply the standards defined in BS 5839-6:2004, Parts 1-9 and BS EN 54, Parts 1-14 and BS EN3 : 1996.

Remember, your life safety equipment will deteriorate over time and you are accountable in law for its condition.

Did you know, for instance, that you should replace all batteries in your fire alarm system every 3 years from their date of manufacture (not from the date when your system was installed).

- How can I get better CCTV coverage yet use fewer cameras?

By replacing static cameras with pan, tilt, zoom (PTZ) equivalents coupled with a state-of-art control system, you can get as much, if not more, coverage by using
less cameras.

This is because that latest systems now integrate intruder detection with the CCTV system, which enables the cameras to automatically zoom in to any location that goes into alarm.  This will enable you to use less cameras and will also improve the recorded evidence as any intruders will be tracked by the cameras thus keeping them in shot for more of the time.

- Mobile phone tariffs are so complicated. How do I know I'm getting the
  best deal?

The mobile phone market is incredibly competitive and, as a result, service providers deliberately make their tariffs complicated and non-standard so as to make if difficult for you to compare them and to put you off of switching your account.

Whether you have the best deal or not depends mostly on your profile of use.  For example: whether you make a lot of international calls or calls to other mobiles.  There are many factors to be taken into consideration to ensure that you actually do get the best deal in the long run.  There are many hidden traps and you can end up being worse off when you switch to what appears to be a cheaper supplier.

You are best advised to talk to someone who understands the mobile phone market and has an up to date knowledge of all the current deals available.

- How do I know that my UPS will actually work in a power cut?

You are best advised to get your UPS physically tested on a regular basis to ensure that it’s control systems will detect and react correctly to a power failure and that it’s batteries are in good condition.  Remember all batteries deteriorate over time and you should budget for their replacement every four to five years.

If your UPS is more than five years old and you haven’t had it checked recently then it may let you down when you need it most.

If you would like further help on this subject why not ask one of our UPS experts.

- How can I install telecoms into a railway environment?

All railway environments are highly regulated from a health and safety perspective.  Specific regulations vary depending upon the type of railway, the network operator (e.g. London Underground, Network Rail, etc.) and the infrastructure maintainer (e.g. Metronet, Tubelines, Jarvis, etc.) however, they all demand that contractors are fully qualified before they are granted permits to work.

Brookvex is fully qualified to work within the London Underground (LUL) environment and has expert knowledge of LUL’s telephony assets and cable routes as well as all the operating procedures required to work on them.

Brookvex is also a registered supplier with Link-Up, the UK rail industry qualification scheme that provides a single common qualification process that is shared by Network Rail and over 80 rail organisations.

- How can I cut over live telecoms circuits without causing any faults?

To do this successfully requires a combination of the right test equipment, a good technical method and experienced engineers.

Brookvex has experience of successfully cutting over tens of thousands of live analogue and digital telecoms pairs (including safety related circuits) without causing service interruptions or faults.

If you would like further help on this subject why not ask one of our telecoms experts.
